Deciding on or going through treatment

Choosing a treatment, going through it, or living with the side effects — each brings its own worries. There are people who have been through exactly this, and are willing to talk.

What to focus on first

It helps to understand your options and what each one involves before you decide. Ask about what matters to you — including cost and everyday life, not only the medicine.

Steps you can take now

  1. Take someone with you to appointments — a second person hears what you might miss.
  2. Write your questions down before you go, and take notes during.
  3. Ask for copies of your test results and reports, and keep them in one place.
  4. You are allowed to ask for time to think, and to ask for a second opinion.

A practical checklist

Printable checklists to take to your appointments are being prepared.

Questions to ask your doctor

  • What does this mean, in plain language?
  • What are my options, and which do you recommend for me — and why?
  • What are the benefits and risks of each option?
  • What is this likely to cost, and what financial support is available?
  • Who do I contact if I have a question later?

Urgent advice: If you are worried that something is seriously wrong

Do not wait. Contact your doctor, or go to your nearest hospital. Trust your instinct — it is always better to be checked.

There is a seat for you.

You do not have to face this alone, or in silence. Talk to men and families who have been where you are.
